Garden Festivals NZ 2020
New Zealand is home to dozens of gorgeous gardens and parks, so it’s really no wonder that we also have a number of annual garden festivals.
From Taranaki to Christchurch, here are some of the most colourful garden festivals that you can look forward to this year:
Taranaki Garden Festival
Dates: 30th October – 8th November 2020
The Taranaki Garden Festival is arguably the most famous garden festival in the country. The annual event, which has delighted gardening enthusiasts for the past 32 years, features a wide variety of performances, art exhibitions, fairs, and tours.
Visitors can explore around 50 beautiful gardens during this 10-day event. There are also classes, wine tastings, luncheons, and galas! If you love learning about gardening and indulging in a bit of culture, this event should definitely be in your calendar.
Bay of Plenty Garden and Art Festival
Dates: 19th – 22nd November 2020
Whale watching isn’t the only thing you can do in the Bay of Plenty; this spot in North Island is also famous for its gorgeous weather and equally gorgeous gardens. From November 19th to the 22nd, art meets nature in the annual Bay of Plenty Garden and Art Festival. Garden enthusiasts can visit around 70 gardens and interact with dozens of local artists during the event. Enjoy art exhibits, delectable food, live entertainment, and landscape gardens galore!
Hurunui Garden Festival
Dates: 30th October – 1st November 2020
Three short days are never enough for the Hurunui Garden Festival, but we’ll take what we can get. This festival features quaint private gardens that are strategically grouped together in clusters, making your visit easy to plan and navigate. Plus, most of these venues are just an hour’s drive from the Christchurch airport— the perfect getaway for tourists and first-time visitors.
The Hurunui Garden Festival may not be as long and as loud as the other events on this list, but it’s a great choice if you want to have a slice of peace and quiet.
Pūkaha Wairarapa Garden Tour
Dates: 7th-8th November 2020
If you love rhododendrons and other spring blooms, the Pukaha Wairarapa Garden Tour is something to look forward to. For two days, you can enjoy this beautiful self-drive tour in Northern Wairarapa. Here you’ll find both wide-open spaces reminiscent of English country sides, gardens fit for small, urban settings, and even historical homesteads. What we love most about this tour is that it also features “food forests” and events that highlight sustainable food production.
Best of all, this tour also aims to raise funds for Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, which advocates the conservation of local flora and fauna.
Alexandra Blossom Festival
Dates: 25th-27th September 2020
Celebrate the spring season with Alexandra’s annual Blossom Festival. The event isn’t only limited to garden tours and exhibits; it also features grand processions, games, truck shows, arts and crafts markets, live entertainment, and many more. If you want to start the season of growth with a bang, Alexandra’s Blossom Festival is your best bet.
